Welcome to Rack Hack!
This is a blog where I share my refashion projects. Until
recently I had not known there was such a thing as refashion. It was only until
I came up with the idea for starting this blog that I realized that I was not
the first. Browsing through different refashion websites, I see that there are
many styles of refashion, and here you will find my own unique creations.
My goal is to share how I am able to create longer term
relationships with my clothes. Clothes are non-durable materials; with everyday
use they fade, wear, tear, shrink, and stain. But luckily, with just a little
bit of effort, they can be repaired, restored, or revived. By taking the time
to do this, we can benefit our environment by reducing fashion consumerism. It
is also a truly enjoyable process, something I relish in. This is the slogan
for Rack Hack.
Refashioning is something I have done since a teenager. In
my early twenties, when I received my first paychecks, instead of hitting the
mall, I would head over to the consignment store close to my house and pick out
some really cool and unique items. Most of the time they didn’t fit well or
were really old, so I would open up my tool box and get to work on them. Sometimes
I’d end up with something really cool that everyone would comment on; and
sometimes it was a complete disaster and the garment was totally ruined. Nevertheless,
it was always a really fun experience!
My current style goes along the professional, or mainstream attire,
but with some unexpected deviations. My clothes are the basic pieces that
probably everyone has in their closet. If you browse through my posts, I can
almost guarantee you will find something that you can apply to transform one of
your own pieces. You may also notice that my refashion projects do not require
seamstress skills. My sewing machine is the same one I had since I was 11, and
it is not exactly in the best operating conditions. I have problems with the
tension, and the light comes on and off on its own. So I only use it for seams
that will be hidden or not apparent.
I also would love to hear from you. Please tell me if you
have tried any of the projects and how you like the result. Pictures would be
the icing on the cake. I will truly appreciate it! There is a page that I have
dedicated to my readers and I would love to fill it up with your creations.
Also on this blog you will find tips on how to care for your clothes, refashion
events in Portland, Ore, and how to contact me. I hope you enjoy it!
Yours truly,
Adriana F
